I am a physo treating a 25 year old following a anterior stabilisation(bankart). How long should we limit external rotation for, and are there any other special considerations to bear in mind during rehabilitation.
The specific rehab after Bankart is totally dependant on the following:
– the method the surgeon used ( the number of the anchors, the security of the knots etc)
-the experience of the surgeon
-the quality of the tissues
We do not put the patients in slings after Bankar repairs and follow a policy of accelerated rehab in close consulation with the physios. At the end of the procedure I take the arm through the full range of movements and watch with the scope to see at what specific range the repair comes under strain. We will then inform the physios of those safer ranges and they can work within those ranges from the start.
